Frequently Asked Questions

Do I need to be naked in the hammam?

In traditional hammams (beldi), women wear underwear, men wear boxers. In tourist/luxury hammams, disposable underwear is provided. Full nudity is never mandatory.

What should I bring?

Beldi hammam: black soap, kessa glove, towel, underwear/boxers, shampoo. Luxury hammam: nothing, everything is provided. Remember a bottle of water!

How long does a hammam last?

Beldi hammam: 1h30 to 2h depending on your pace. Tourist hammam: 1h30 on average. Luxury hammam: 2h30 to 3h with full rituals.

Can I go during my period?

Yes, with appropriate protection. Traditional hammams are sometimes stricter on this point by tradition.

Is the exfoliation painful?

The exfoliation can be vigorous but should not be painful. Do not hesitate to ask for less pressure if needed.

How often should I go to the hammam?

Moroccans often go once a week. For a tourist, 2-3 times during a stay is ideal. Avoid right after a sunburn!
