Guelmim-Oued Noun
Gateway to the Sahara, Land of the Blue Men
Guelmim, the "gateway to the Sahara," was the last caravanserai before crossing the desert. The region preserves the traditions of the "Blue Men," the Tuareg nomads dressed in indigo.
Histoire
For centuries, Guelmim was the starting point for caravans to Timbuktu. The Saturday camel market perpetuates this tradition. The nomadic tribes Reguibat and Tekna roamed these vast expanses.
Géographie
The region marks the transition between Atlantic Morocco and the Sahara. The climate is desertic with oceanic influences on the coast. Landscapes alternate between rocky hamadas, oases, and wild beaches.
