Histoire de Marrakech
Marrakech, whose name means "Land of God" in Berber, gave its name to all of Morocco. Founded in 1062 by the Almoravids, it quickly became the capital of an empire stretching from Spain to Senegal.
Under the Almohads (12th century), the city experienced its golden age: construction of the Koutoubia, the ramparts, and the irrigation system for the gardens. The Saadian dynasty (16th century) erected the sumptuous tombs and the El Badi Palace.
Today, Marrakech is Morocco's tourist capital, attracting over 3 million visitors per year. Its UNESCO heritage (medina) and vibrant cultural life make it a must-see destination.

Where to Sleep?
Stay in a traditional riad in the medina for an authentic experience. The most beautiful ones are around the souks and the Ben Youssef Mosque. For absolute luxury, La Mamounia and Royal Mansour are world references.
Gastronomy
Try Tanjia (meat cooked for 24 hours in a jar), pigeon pastilla, and tagines flavored with dried fruits. Jemaa el-Fna Square offers a unique culinary experience in the evening.
Transportation
Beige taxis (meter mandatory), horse-drawn carriages for folklore. The medina is explored on foot. Modern electric buses to Guéliz.
